Periodontitis is the most serious of the periodontal diseases, usually referred to as gum diseases. Among adults, periodontitis is the number one cause of tooth loss. The 2 major forms of periodontal disease are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a reversible condition involving gingival inflammation. Periodontitis, on the other hand, involves both gingival inflammation and loss of tooth attachment. This detachment is caused by destruction of the ligament and bone surrounding your teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease progresses to the point where the bone loss is so severe that the tooth becomes loose, and in the worst case, is lost. However, if your condition is treated early and aggressively by you and your dental professional, it is possible to effectively slow the progression of the disease.
